The brief
The opportunity to reproduce one of the world’s largest dinosaurs at 100% scale on vinyl doesn’t come around very often. So when the WA Museum Boola Bardip asked us to print and install this one we were very excited, it’s definitely not your average printed vinyl!
The Dinosaurs of Patagonia was a world-first exhibition showcasing full scale skeletons of dinosaurs from the ancient time in Patagonia, as well as amazing fossils and new finds. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the incredible Patagotitan, a 38m giant from the Cretaceous period and one of the largest dinosaurs to have ever lived.
What is Custom Vinyl Printing, and why was it chosen?
Custom Vinyl printing is one of our favourite products to print! Using Custom Vinyl printing we can print any design, and almost any size, for any application! We print designs directly onto the vinyl substrate, which is then cut to the required size (or in this case, shape) and then installed. For this project Custom Vinyl Printing was selected as it allowed us to reproduce the Patagotitan at 100% scale for a life sized mural on the external facade of the Museum as part of the event branding to promote the exhibition. Using double sided vinyl, the intricate shapes of the Patagotitan skeleton have been machine cut to allow maximum vision and light through the windows where the vinyl has been installed. Being double sided, the view from inside the Museum shop is equally impressive - the detail of the skeleton really shows up. As does the incredible scale of this beast!
Custom Vinyl Printing - production and installation
The vinyl for the Patagotitan was all printed in-house at C Results on our HP R-1000 flatbed printer, with cutting handled by our Zund Cutter. Our experienced installers were on site at the Museum before-trade to ensure the vinyl was installed with minimal disruption, at over 6m tall the installation was completed using a scissor lift.
The double sided vinyl is UV stable so perfect for outdoor use, and the adhesive is non-marking so removal is quick and easy, important with a difficult installation that relies on the bones of the skeleton being in exactly the right place.

The Dinosaurs of Patagonia exhibition features 13 dinosaur species, 16 skeleton casts, incredible fossils, 3D animations and video, as well as loads of interactive fun for all the family. The exhibition has now finished, however we hope it is back soon as it was a spectacular showcase of these incredible animals!
