C Results Celebrates National Scrabble Day!

Why would anyone want to play a game that’s based on remembering obscure words, and causes you to feel stupid when you lose? Because it’s national Scrabble Day!

Nearly 90 years ago, an unemployed architect named Alfred Butts invented a word game called Lexiko. It was a flop, just like the first AFL derby of 2022 for West Coast. Despite many iterations & improvements, after 25 years no-one was interested in the game, and it was relegated to a loss-making exercise. Fast forward to 2022, and the same game is sold in 121 countries and is available in more than 30 languages. Family inheritances have been lost over it, new words have been invented, and literacy rates have continued to decline. That doesn’t matter though, as over 150 million sets have been sold worldwide, making Hasbro a ton of cash. That game, is Scrabble!

Each year, April the 13th marks Annual Scrabble Day, held on the date of the birthday of Mr Alfred Butts. This year, we joined in the birthday celebration for the great Mr Butts, and produced a giant Scrabble board for a C Results Results Scrabble competition!

While Scrabble is obviously great, we added a few C Results twists to the game with some custom rules to keep the team on their toes....

  • To keep the game moving, each team has 1 minute to play their word

  • Slang words may be used, consult urban dictionary to validate if needed

  • Power score words: Specific words have additional points attached:

    • Honey - add 10 points

    • Printing - add 20 points

    • CResults - add 30 points

    • TimTams - add 50 points

  • Yellow square Double Tim Tam Score: Person with the most yellow squares bags a pack of Tim Tams!

Throwing it down with a casual 13 points with ‘Grief’ to kick things off, Team Blue immediately lost their initial lead to Team Pink with the soberingly relevant 24 point word ‘Floods’. A simple ‘Cone’ brought Team White on the scoreboard, while Team Black battled their way into the game with the 3 point pre-primary learn-to-read ‘Rat’, and would continue to battle for the rest of the game.

‘Look, as soon as we saw Team Black go for ‘Rat’ and then ‘It’ we knew they were on the ropes’ said Team Blue’s Zippy, ‘Just a poor use of vowels and no double up letters from other words, I mean, where’s the strategic thinking! Tim Tams are at stake here!!’

Team Black would eventually land ‘beef’ for 27 points, but it was too little too late. Team Blue and Pink had already run ahead neck and neck, but eventually Team Blue delivered the sucker-punch, 26 points for a craftily placed ‘Joe’ followed by 50 points across ‘Crustier’ ‘Tax’ and ‘Qi’ securing a storming win of 165 points.

‘It was tight for a while there, but we managed to bag ‘crust’ and ‘crustier’, pretty easy when you’re playing some crusty opponents’ commented Team Blue’s Emmalene. ‘The other teams had some good words later in the game but they just missed the double word and letter scores. Too focused on getting the bonus Tim Tams’. While they missed first place, Team White ended up snagging the most Tim Tam points, adding a sweet bonus to their second place.

For a sobering reality check, high scoring words played in recent scrabble tournaments by scrabble wizards include "zonular" (100 points), which means 'like a zone', "maledict" (95 points) — which means 'to utter a curse against', and Groutier (68 points) - which means more cross, sulky or sullen, which for some is the outcome after a heated Scrabble Game!

Our giant scrabble board was designed in-house by our graphics wizard Kody, and produced on 5mm foamboard using our state of the art HP R1000 latex printer, with letters and stands cut with our ZUND digital cutter.
